The Board of Directors of the National Fraternity
At each even year National Convention, delegates elect new alumni and undergraduate members to terms of office on the National Fraternity Board of Directors.
There are fifteen directors. At the discretion of the Board of Directors they may elect a sixteenth director. They have customarily elected the Executive Director to this sixteenth position, and then elected the Executive Director as the Executive Vice President. All directors (with the exception of the Executive Vice President) are volunteers who serve without pay. There are ten members elected to four-year terms, and five to two-year terms. The Executive Vice President, if the Board elects one, has a four-year term. Under the Constitution, three of the directors must be undergraduates. The undergraduate directors’ perspectives play a significant part in policy decisions, which strengthens KDR. The board appoints the Executive Director. The board meets at least twice a year in person to discuss issues facing KDR, and the status of KDR operations and programs. The Board of Directors elects the National Officers from among themselves to one-year terms. The descriptions of the National Officers are as follows:
The President presides over the National Convention and at meetings of the Board of Directors. The President maintains close contact with the Executive Vice President/Executive Director to make sure he carries out all program policies and procedures. He is KDR’s voting delegate to the North-American Interfraternity Conference where he confers with other interfraternal presidents and officers about developments affecting the fraternity world. (See page 67 for the list of National Presiding Officers.)
The Executive Vice President/Executive Director supervises the National Office and the daily operations of the fraternity. He also coordinates the work of Board of Directors, volunteers and National Office staff. He supervises the growth and stability of current chapters. He also supervises and assists the creation of new chapters. He makes frequent visits to chapters and alumni groups. The Executive Vice President/Executive Director meets with directors of other fraternities and their staffs at regional and national meetings. He is the editor-in-chief of the Quill and Scroll and supervises other fraternity publications. (See page 68 for the list of National Executive Secretaries and Executive Directors.)
The Treasurer is responsible for the general supervision of the collection and disbursement of all funds of the National Fraternity. The Treasurer also serves as the chairman of the Finance Committee. Every year, he prepares a national budget, issues quarterly financial statements, and prepares for audits.
The Vice President of Standards and Risk Management oversees general policies relating to all fraternity judiciary matters, including official investigations and determination of all penalties. As chairman of the National Judiciary Committee, he is responsible for the enforcement of the KDR Constitution and Bylaws. He serves as KDR’s chief risk management officer. In the absence or incapacity of the President, he performs those duties.
The Vice President for Finance and Administration oversees general policy relating to financial planning and office administration. He coordinates the financial and administration functions with the Treasurer and Secretary.
The Vice President for Education oversees general policy relating to undergraduate education, scholarship, ritual, and related matters.
The Vice President for Alumni Affairs oversees general programs relating to encouraging and continuing the involvement of alumni in the affairs of the Fraternity, as well as providing a focal point for programs specifically targeted for the benefit of alumni.
The Secretary takes and maintains accurate minutes at all National Conventions, Board of Directors meetings, and Executive Committee meetings. He coordinates his activities with the Executive Vice President.
The Board of Directors makes a very large volunteer commitment to KDR and her members. They are always seeking ways to improve the National Fraternity for the benefit of all members. The Board of Directors highly values input from all members.
