Kappa Delta Rho Implements Online Program to Assist Members in Making Safe and Healthy Decisions

12/9/2008

The National Fraternity of Kappa Delta Rho announced today that it will implement an online program, GreekLifeEdu™, that will educate members about behaviors that compromise personal safety and challenge members’ preconceived social norms. GreekLifeEdu is an interactive program that educates members on the issues associated with alcohol consumption, hazing, and sexual assault. This decision reflects Kappa Delta Rho’s commitment to the health and welfare of her members.

“We have a responsibility to help ensure the safety of our students,” states Joseph S. Rosenberg, Executive Director at Kappa Delta Rho. “Instead of allowing these issues to affect our chapters, we are trying to get out ahead of the problem, educating members about the dangers associated with high-risk drinking, hazing, and sexual assault and providing appropriate prevention programs and resources to students.”

GreekLifeEdu provides an experience that impacts both individual behavior and community culture. Relying on evidence-based prevention methods, learner-centered pedagogy, and up-to-date science-based content, GreekLifeEdu provides each member with a carefully customized user experience that inspires members to reflect on and consider changing their behaviors. Using IM chats and You-Tube-like videos, the course communicates in ways that make sense to today’s millennial members, presenting content in entertaining formats devised to increase student engagement and interest.

The Brothers of Kappa Delta Rho aspire to lead and live an honorable life.  At the core of this endeavor is to treat everyone including oneself with dignity and respect.   This is the main theme of KDR’s  member education program, The Path.  At the core of the GreekLifeEdu online program is dignity and respect for one’s own body and the dignity and respect of others.  It is a perfect complement to KDR’s  current and future education efforts.

Through GreekLifeEdu, members learn what is in a "standard drink," different factors that affect Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), how to help a friend who experiences an alcohol overdose, and guidelines for being a safe party host. Next, students learn to identify different forms of hazing and have access to state laws related to this issue. Students are also asked to generate a list of safe initiation practices to use in their chapter. The final module of GreekLifeEdu presents the facts and myths surrounding sexual assault.  The male pathway challenges perceived social norms about male behaviors and attitudes, and provides guidelines for determining consent. Video scenarios provide members with tools to intervene when witnessing inappropriate behavior or assault.

It is our hope that by providing this educational resource for our members we will assist them in making safe and healthy decisions in regards to supporting friends who have issue with alcohol; how to help a friend who experiences an alcohol overdose; guidelines for being a safe party host; identifying different forms of hazing; and understanding the facts and myths surrounding sexual assault.
